A Day at Little Canyon - April 29, 2008

IdahoSportsman.com welcomes you to "The Little Canyon Shooting Preserve"!

We were all sitting around the house the other day feeling the time of season. Really nothing to do, but the weather is gorgeous.
Big D, looked over at me and said, "we should all go to Little Canyon and shoot some pheasants"!

My eyes lit up and Leo's head raised as I began the words, "wann find the birds, wanna huntem up"? After a couple of phone calls to the ranch we were set up to hunt the next day.

Our rendezvous was set for 9:30am and the day was already glistening. Leo was running all over the house in frantic excitement as I jiggle his dog whistle.

Big D and Jake loaded up their gear and we hit the road for Plummer, Idaho.

We arrive at Little Canyon a little after 9:30am and were greeted by Jack and Carroll with the type of hospitality only good country living can bring. We all chatted about our harvests this past fall and shared some of our German sausage from the wild game.

After being issued our tribal license, and Jack displacing some game, Jake, Dan, Leo and I headed for the creek bottom.

Intro... Jake's 2nd bird of the day! Jake's 3rd bird woops!
Ken's 2nd bird! Ken's last bird!
Closing of the day!

The first bird was a runner on Dan's side of the patch, so I sent Leo over and the rooster flushed. Being out of Dan's line of fire, I took the shot. Leo makes the retrieve with the enthusiasm of a first year bird hunt.

The next bird was harvest by Dan and hopping hen from out of nowhere. Nice shot Big D

Now it was Jake's turn and the camera was turned over to me; a beautiful right to left low house shot and the bird gets retrieved by Leo. Now it's my turn and Jake takes over as videographer, which he is the best at. Leo locks up on point and serves up this black beauty. I make an ok shot sending the bird motionless to the ground.

Now Dan takes over with a rooster from his side; a straight away shot later and Leo is on another mission.

Bird after bird, point after point, and retrieve after retrieve, we continue out the day with laughter and enjoyment. There is nothing like getting a little action in the off season. We wanted to express our gratitude for Jack and Carroll's hospitality and putting up with a bunch of good ol' boys from Coeur d'Alene, so we closed out our day with a little note.

Take a look through from start to finish with some of our highlights!
