Dog Training 101, Fido takes you to school - April 29, 2008
You’re sitting in your easy chair relaxing by a roaring fire. You’re thinking of how much fun you had this past bird season hunting over your partners dogs. The content of success and the admiration of a well trained/seasoned canine are all that it takes for you to realize, “I need a bird dog!” You tread lightly around breaking it to your significant other, that all of the sudden your already tainted time spent is about to be even more tainted. “Guess what honey, we’re getting a dog!” Surprisingly she likes the idea; you’re overwhelmed with excitement and joy. After all she feels like you need someone who understands you.
After lots of studying and research of dog training by masters such as Richard A. Wolters, your thinking, “this is going to be cake”. Huh famous last words.
Well here we are you’ve bought this little $350.00 bundle of bird hunting fun, from proven parents and your on your way. You follow the master’s instruction to the tee, and you realize that you have actually taught this little guy how to sit. After almost breaking your arm patting yourself on the back, you notice that this little dude is taking to all his lessons well. It must be you right! WRONG. I mean sure your instruction was well intercepted, but what you didn’t realize is that these small fury hunting machines are very, very smart and eager to please. Their passion and studious nature all drove by their love for you.
Now you have Fido running on all pistons, and ready to make some unlucky bird’s day worse. But wait you think to your self, “I didn’t teach him how to hunt, or what to look for.” This is where you are wrong. The dog already knows how and what to hunt, and if you pay close attention you just might learn a thing or two.
Your dog, if born from other hunting dogs will hunt until there is no tomorrow. You just have to control his urges and position, so that it benefits both of you. Fido will teach you how to find birds, hunt down wind, point, and maybe even a thing or two about style.
You have done well you should be very proud of yourself. You have had plenty of patients, compassion, and love. That is all Fido needs, he’ll take care of the rest.
