Successfully Bow Hunting Turkeys - April 29, 2008

It’s an early spring morning in the turkey woods. Lots of sounds fill the damp air, but one stands out among the rest; it’s the gobble of the Boss Tom Turkey that is lurking not far off. You commit to your position and start to yelp. The big long beard seems to coming in on a string, he approaches; your heart and hopes sink as he holds up just out of bow range, and you think to yourself if I only had a shot gun.

Well here ya go! A group of articles put together with tips on how to bow hunt turkeys and getting close.

Bow Hunting Equipment

Some of us are so worried about the hunt we forget to think about what we will do if we do get close to one of these suckers. So that is why we will start off with the supplies list. We will start with the bow; this will be your choice, shoot the bow that you shoot best because you’re going to need all the accuracy you can get! However you may want to reduce the poundage on your compounds for accuracy and non penetration purposes. If possible it is best if your arrow doesn’t go through the bird, this increases your chances of success. Turkeys are very resilient and after taking a vital pass-through blow to the body can often fly or run off and die later. You want to stop that bird right away.

Next we will move on to what you tip your arrow with. Some of you prefer three blade broad heads such as thunderheads, these work ok but I had to do some tracking when I shot my first turkey with them. My recommendation is to go with expandables; they fly like field tips and blow a barn door through your target, this sounds like a turkey getter to me! Now it is down to you. Let’s face it you can use pretty much use any type of bow, arrow, or broad head you choose if can hit the perfect spot on the turkey. Hit em in the head, neck or vertebrate and you will have a downed bird. Happy Hunting!

Getting Close! Bow hunting these darned turkeys can be like herding gold fish! Let’s be honest it’s not easy. We need to get close, and what happens when a turkey gets close, they can see you and your movement even better. Let’s talk about a couple of cool ways to fool those hardcore paranoiacs.

The fist is decoys, these things are awesome! They keep the turkeys mind and attention off you. But you must place them in the right position or the turkey will think there is something up.

Next you will need some sort of cover that will allow you to move with out the turkey seeing you. Natural blinds like bushes, brush, logs, things like that work well, but ground blinds work better. These structures will give you the freedom to move and draw back your bow; a must.

Now let’s talk about your position. When we are elk hunting we are always trying to position our selves between the elk and the caller, so the elk passes by you unknowingly looking for the elk he hears behind you. Hunting turkeys is pretty much the same thing; you want to place your decoys out about 20 yards in front of you in your ground blind, with the Tom behind you, so the Tom has to pass by you to get to the decoys. This causes the bird to move extremely close to you while trying to come in to you your set up.

Try these techniques and you will start getting closer to your turkeys!
